Token swapping in crypto is fundamental. Unfortunately, the many token bridges and basic cross-chain stableswap solutions are limited in chain compatibility and/or security. With ZetaChain message passing or Omnichain Smart Contracts, developers can enable native trades between any token on any chain in a trust-minimized way.

Message-Passing

You can build a DEX using our message passing feature where the asset pool is managed by smart contracts on external chains, paired with a ZETA coin. Here, a swap of asset X on chain A for asset Y on chain B is accomplished in the following steps:

1. Swap X for ZETA on chain A using smart contract managed pool and AMM

2. Pass message, together with the ZETA coin from chain A to chain B

3. Chain B smart contract managed pool (Y/ZETA) swaps ZETA coin for Y

With message passing, dApp states and logic are spread across all external chains where ZetaChain only acts as a message verifier and relayer. This makes it easy to use existing infrastructure.

Omnichain Smart Contracts

With native ZetaChain smart contracts, the ZetaChain Threshold Signature Scheme (TSS) account holds all the native assets on external chains, which can be managed by ZetaChain contracts directly. The ZetaChain smart contract implements AMM logic that determines pricing, swap, liquidity providers, and fees — all in one contract.

DEX built with ZetaChain Smart Contracts. Since ZetaChain TSS can manage external chain pools with its smart contracts, DEX can even support non-smart-contract chains and assets where transactions are simple and single-step.

This approach is different from message passing in that the logic and state of the dApp lives on ZetaChain, a single platform with a unified interface to interact with external chains. Here are some benefits:

• Ease of dApp development (minimal development efforts in accommodating new chains)

• Flexibility (no longer constrained to chain idiosyncrasies and message-passing cross-chain interaction)

• Minimal reliance on external chain smart contracts so complex logic can work on not only smart-contract chains, but also UTXO chains like Bitcoin

• All slippage/pricing and logic is just in one smart contract so transactions are faster and single-step
